Hooding Around
In this one hour and thirty minute
class, participants will learn about early and late
period hood construction including appropriate
materials, construction methods, and uses of hoods. We
will cover how to make dags, liripipe and other period
components. Participants will create a hood pattern
and cut out a hood, they will be able to finish the
hood by hand or with a machine when they leave the
class.

levels and all genders.

This is a hands-on demonstration of what is involved in the daily operation of a small dairy, from the product perspective. We will begin class with a bucket of cream-line milk, and make a variety of products from all the milk components. At the end of class we will have made butter, buttermilk, and two varieties (possibly three) of cheese - all from the original single bucket of milk.  9 am -10:30 am Sat Practical Application of Historic Sword Techniques to SCA Fighting
This class will cover aspects of the existing historic sword manuals that are allowable and applicable to SCA combat. The majority of the material will be drawn from Royal Armouries Manuscript I.33 (ca. 1295) and the Getty version of Fiore dei Liberi's Flos Battaglia (ca. 1409).
We will cover fundamentals such as footwork, positions or guards, controlling your opponent's blade, timing, and defense.

Ever wondered just what your persona really would be doing in period? This class will be a beginner's overview of women's lives, covering roughly the late 1200's to the mid 1400's, from England to France to Italy and beyond. From noblewoman to peasant, nun to artisan, we will look at the various social classes, what women did and what a typical day might be like for them. Handouts will be given.

of the Knight of the Tower" and "The Goodman of
Paris."

The "Knight of the Tower" (circa 1371-2) was written by Geoffroy de la Tour-Landry, a knight of Anjou, who compiled a book of precepts and anecdotes for the "edification" of his daughters. The 15th Century "English" translation of this medieval book will be the source of a discussion on the morals and mores of the 14th Century. "The Goodman of Paris" (1392-4) was written by an elderly Parisian merchant as a book of instruction for his new, young bride. Using these treatises, this class will take a look at how young women in the 14th century were molded into the perfect example of daughters, wives, and mothers.

This class will look at where Commedia dell'Arte started, how it evolved, the basic Commedia characters and masks, and if time, a scenario or two, and again if time, perhaps a bit of improvisational work for those interested.
(ed note: the characters of this type of play became classic stereotypes that we see even in todays plays. Think Punch and Judy and you will just begin to scratch the surface of this art form.)

This beautiful silk-embroidered sheer cotton garment is easy to make. It is suitable for both Persian and Ottoman clothing - and with a simple alteration of the sleeve it works well as an Ottoman woman's gomlek. I will not be teaching the embroidery, which is in mostly in double running stitch and pattern darning, but will include pictures of it.

A woman's healing dance. Middle Eastern animistic tradition does not differentiate between a physical ailment and a
mental or emotional malaise. That which ails you is caused by the djinn--male spirits. The purpose of the dance is not to exorcise the spirits, but to make peace with them. The djinn are seen as mischievous instead of evil, and have the potential to be useful as well as troublesome.

Medieval quilting is a one-color art, created with fine stitches on solid colored fabric. The technique is simple and elegant and the materials inexpensive. Learn the stitches on a small piece of corded and stuffed quilting, and take home patterns from period quilts.

 2:30 pm - 4 pm Sat 3 Basic Stitches, Part 2
This class assumes the students know the three basic stitches previously taught - chain, stem, and satin. They will not be used specifically in this class, but might be of use for "prior knowledge" purposes. The stitches covered in this class will be back stitch (the inverse of stem stitch), buttonhole stitch, and French (and maybe Colonial) knots. The class project will be a small pouch or similar item.

This class assumes students have basic embroidery knowledge - threading the needle, stripping floss, tensioning, etc. The class will focus on 6 types of pulled stitches, executed in white thread on white linen. Knowledge of buttonhole stitch will enable students to edge the small 5-petal rose they'll stitch, and applique it to a ground fabric after it's done.

This class will teach the basic form of this arabic-looking hand for those who wish to do scrolls for their friends with a middle-eastern personae. This is not a period hand, but an invented doodle that people may read easily and still convey a eastern cultural flavor for our SCA award scrolls. This would be suggested for the intermediate scribe, though all are welcome.

Learn to spin in high Medieval fashion, before the introduction of that barbarian device (gasp!) the spinning wheel. A brief history lecture will precede hands-on instruction in the use of the hand spindle (what today is known as the 'drop spindle"). Both beginners and experienced spinners are welcome.

Description: Learn this documentable craft that turns strings into strong flexible cords. Fingerloop braids found in digs in London have been dated to as early as the 12th century. Recipes for many different braids have been translated from various instruction manuals from as early as 1475. This class will give you some background on the braids, their use and their manufacture. Then we'll make two or three different styles of braids.

Using a Wooden kit, we will build a catapult that can shoot grapes or small rounded balls of bread dough. If there is time we will also paint them, if not there will be directions on how to paint up the catapult yourself. Kit includes hammer and screwdriver.
If your child is in scouts, this could count towards a craftsman (craft making) activity badge.
