Performance Skills for The SCA

The West has a wonderful bardic tradition, but what makes one performer more interesting and engaging then another?  Performance skills.
Many performers simply get up and perform without ever considering the vast array of things they could do to improve their ability to be heard and understood, to be seen or be truly engaging to an audience.  Many don't even know these skills exist.
We'll focus on the tricks of the trade used by professional performers and pay special attention to the needs of the SCA performance venue.
If you want to bring a piece to perform and have reviewed please do so.  There will be a limited number of performances reviewed.

Deciphering Juan de Alcega's Tailor's Pattern book of 1589

Juan de Alcega's Tailor's Book of Patterns from 1589 can be confusing and hard to understand. The text provided by the translators doesn't help in understanding how the pieces go together, how to draft the patterns, adjust them to your size and measurements or any of the things that would make using this gem of a book easier. However, Alcega himself gives us the clues we need to be able to use his wonderful patterns and layouts over 400 years latter.  Come and learn how to decipher the patterns and make them work for measurements. We will cover several of the patterns in the book and you will leave understanding how to use this valuable resource in the future.

Beginning Fingerloop Braiding

Learn a simple technique for making braids and laces.  The commonest type of small cord found in surviving examples of drawstrings, purse-strings, and similar functional and decorative uses was made by a technique called fingerloop braiding.  (We even have some late-period instruction manuals on how to do this technique!)  This class will introduce you to variations on a basic five-loop braid and students will construct a sampler using multiple variants.  We'll also learn how to work in pairs with one person working as "beater" to make tighter and more consistent long braids.

Fingerloop Braiding Basics

Fingerloop braiding is one form of the technique of loop manipulation, which can be used to make laces of all sizes and complexities.

Fingerloop braids found in digs in London have been dated to as early as the 12th century. These examples are purse strings, edgings for hairnets, and loose braids (possibly laces or hat laces).

Come and learn how to make a standard round lace, a brode lace, if time permits, a lace baston. Our patterns are taken from a manual of fingerloop braiding dated to 1475.
